BT is launching a new service called BT Movio which allows mobile phones to receive live TV and radio using the DAB digital radio network.
Initially limited to customers of Virgin Mobile the service doesn’t rely on 3G like other mobile TV services. BBC, ITV and E4 are already signed up and will be offering their shows live to mobile phones.
As well as television channels users will be able to receive 50 digital radio stations depending on location and availability.
The service will launch on October 1st in the UK and is being given free of charge to Virgin Mobile customers on a £25 per month contract or higher.
Alan Gow, managing director, said the “tellyphone” was a watershed in the evolution of broadcasting;
“We are hugely proud of the Virgin Mobile TV service and I think it could revolutionise how, when and where people choose to watch TV,”
The handset alone on pre pay will cost £199 with the service charged at £5 with the first 3 months free of charge.
