I don’t normally like to blog about mobile phone offers as they are quite common and not very hard to find but this one seems quite special.
Carphone Warehouse are offering £180 cashback on the Samsung U600/E840/E900/D900/x830, the Sony Ericsson K810i/W850i/S500i/K800i, the Nokia 7373/6300 and the LG Shine this week.
Unlike a lot of cashback deals you don’t have to wait for your £180 or send in any bills, they send you a cheque straight away. The offer is available on O2 contracts and will be very popular I expect.

After yesterdays post about T Mobile apparently winning the rights to the iPhone in Germany it appears that O2 has won the rights in the UK.
According to The Times Vodafone turned down the deal as it wasn’t commercially viable and O2 will be selling the iPhone in the UK before Christmas.
The iPhone is likely to retail at £300 and O2 apparently will allow Carphone Warehouse to sell the iPhone after the initial launch period.
Apple’s agreement with O2 is thought to include a continuing share of the revenues generated by each iPhone customer. O2 ’s network will also have to be specially configured to accommodate the Apple handset.
The deal is huge news for O2 and Carphone Warehouse, the buzz in the US shows that the phone is as popular as expected and there is no doubt it will get the same reception over here.

Mobile phone network O2 is offering to pay its users NOT to upgrade their mobile phones at the end of a contract, according to The Register.
If everybody in the UK kept their phones for an extra year it would equate to 187,000 cars being removed from the road annually.
O2 is offering a £100 credit if customers don’t upgrade their handsets at the end of the contract.
Matthew Key, Chief Executive O2 UK commented:
Mobiles have changed the way we live and people will always want new phones and the benefits they bring. However, there is an environmental impact from the production of each new phone. With 70 million active mobiles in the UK the collective carbon savings to be gained by keeping handsets longer is simply massive. We therefore want to give customers a choice and an incentive to keep their existing phone and make a difference.

O2 customers in the UK are being offered flat rate internet access at a rate of only £10 per month just by threatening to switch networks.
Apparently O2 are so keen to keep the customers that they are slashing costs on 3G services. New subscribers are charged anything from £48 to £225 for the same service, according to the Sunday Telegraph
Data pricing structures are confusing for users and the market has been heading towards flat rates ever since home internet access was changed to a flat fee some years ago.
T Mobile already offers certain flat rate services but this move by O2 seems to indicate they will follow suit shortly. Whilst this offer is a good sign of things to come it is frustrating that you only qualify by threatening to take your custom elsewhere. Whatever happened to rewarding good customers?
From The Telegraph article:
A spokesman for 3 said O2’s move mirrored developments four years ago when the price of voice calls was slashed after 3 abolished higher charges for -connecting to rival networks at peak times.
“The first thing we saw with voice pricing was rivals trying to match us in retentions but not on the high street,” said the spokesman. “And then the same tariffs started appearing in their published price plans.”
O2 said offers were made on a case-by-case basis. A spokesman said: “Retention teams always have the discretion to match or make offers to retain high-value customers. At the moment introducing flat-rate data tariffs is not part of our plan.”

Last month we heard about a problem with the O2 website that allowed anybody to get a free phone. We didn’t report this at the time because certain friends were busy ordering free Samsung D900’s and Motorola W220s but now it has come to light in Mobile Magazine it seems safe to reveal the details.
How did it work?

Sony Ericsson W880i” align=”right”>
The Sony Ericsson W880i we reported about earlier this month will be released today in the UK. Most retailers are offering this great handset free of charge for contract customers.
Lucky customers signing up to a T Mobile tariff on the official T Mobile website will be able to choose the W880 on a Flext 35 price plan. T Mobile have included some extra features on their version of the W880 such as a dedicated music button giving access to the T Mobile Jukebox service offering full track downloads for £1 per song.
Other offers from O2 and Orange include savings of up to £175 with 5 months free line rental.
The Sony Ericsson W880 is just 9.4mm thick, the same as a CD case, and is the slimmest ever Sony Ericsson mobile phone yet. A 1GB Memory Stick Micro is included in the package so you can store around 1000 tracks.
Also included is a 2 megapixel digital camera.

Mobile phone network O2 has announced that it will no longer allow Phones 4U to sell new mobile contracts from 1st April 2007. The move echo’s a similar Vodafone / Carphone Warehouse story last year.
O2 have signed a new deal with Carphone Warehouse who will apparently push larger volumes now that they are not selling Vodafone handsets. Vodafone last year gave its new business to Phones 4U resulting in Phones 4U selling just 5,000 O2 contracts per month rather than the usual 15,000.
Vodafone it seems were pleased with the O2 deal and congratulated them for finding a way to “optimise their supply chain”.
An O2 spokesman said:
We don’t discuss the commercial terms of our relationships with our indirect partners. We have already said that we expect to do less overall gross connections with independent retailers as we increase our focus on our direct channels. Generally, we continue to work with indirect partners who share our ethos of delivering the best possible customer experience and who can add value.
These deals are not good news for the high street consumer, despite what the networks might lead you to believe. A customer visiting Phones 4U or Carphone Warehouse no longer has as much choice and cannot be sure they are getting the best deal.

Mobile phone network O2 has won a legal battle against a Welsh sales company whose agents have been calling O2 customers and persuading them to switch to rival networks such as Orange and 3.
The practice is known in the trade as slamming and is a major problem for the networks as well as being very lucrative for the sales companies, who often earn substantial commissions.
Landmark Marketing Services was apparently ringing O2 customers offering upgrades and duping them into switching contracts. O2 has now won £500,000 in compensation from Landmark after a number of complaints were made to Ofcom, the regulatory body.
We asked O2 about the deal and a spokesman confirmed:
Landmark has recently entered into a settlement with O2 where it has agreed to put a stop to the practice of mis-selling and has paid £500,000 compensation. We are already involved in pre-litigation correspondence with another company and are lining up several others for actions in the near future.
What can I do if a sales agent rings?
- Don’t give your name. Most use random automated diallers so they don’t have any of your details before the call.
- Tell them you are not interested. If you show the slightest interest, they will keep ringing you until you cave in. Or tell them you have a company phone and that you don’t pay the bill.
- Register with the Telephone Preference Service. This makes it illegal for people to call you in this manner, but some still might.
- Remember you have seven days to terminate your contract. If you sign up and are unhappy, just cancel.
