Apparently China has decided that all phones should have a standardised USB charger and this will be phased in during 2007. This is an issue we have felt strongly about for years. In fact one of the best things about Nokia phones is that somebody always has a Nokia charger you can borrow.

With modern phones having more features and PC link ups the array of chargers has grown so any standardisation would seem a good idea.
The only problem as Slashgear reports is that most poor families may not have a PC so USB may be the wrong choice. However the iPod has a USB charger with mains adapter available so it might not prove to be an issue.
