China launches 4G mobile phone network

by Patrick Altoft on January 29, 2007

China has launched the worlds first 4G mobile phone network, the state media announced today.

Despite delays in the 3G (third generation) network being deployed a group of leading domestic institutions have launched the 4G network in Shanghai, the official China Daily reported.

The 4G system, which has already cost over £10 million, will allow data to be transmitted at speeds of up to 100 Mb per second and will be trialled until 2010.

Meanwhile the 3G network will begin to gather speed when the licenses are finally auctioned off later this year.
