Digital stereoscopic viewer for your mobile phone

by Patrick Altoft on February 28, 2007

This is probably the strangest device we have reviewed for some time. A company called Neochroma are promising to put “a big screen into the palm of your hand” with a stereoscope attachment for your phone.

The idea is that you attach your phone to the device and then view the screen through the stereoscope. Apparently the effect is the same as looking at a 19 inch computer monitor. Whether the current mobile phone screens are operating at a high enough resolution to look good at this size is debatable.

From the Neochroma website:

  • The installed base of camera phones has reached 850 million in 2006.
1.5 billion are predicted for 2010 (source: Lyra Research).

  • While billions of shots are taken every year, tiny screens limit camera phone usage.
With Neochroma, a large and vibrant image can be enjoyed instantly.

  • Neochroma can be used for navigation applications as well.
  • It is stereoscopic (that is, it shows life-like 3D), and can be built very inexpensively.
