Disney has announced a new UK based family orientated mobile phone network in conjunction with O2. It is understood the service will be available on a number of handsets and offer entertainment based content with a Disney theme and parental controls.
Research carried out in the UK indicates that two-thirds of 10 to 15 year-olds currently have a mobile phone of their own.
Similar services already launched in the US have been successful and Disney are looking to build on this with the UK launch.
An increasing number of mobile virtual network operators such as Tesco and Virgin Mobile are renting capacity from the major networks in an increasingly competitive UK market. Disney is well placed to take advantage of this by leveraging video content rather than concentrating on voice calls.
Handsets are not expected to be decorated with cartoons but they will include ring tones and video clips from Disney movies.
