London Underground to get emergency mobile network

by Patrick Altoft on July 22, 2006

O2 is about to close a deal to create a new emergency mobile communication system for the London Underground network.

The £100 million contract is likely to be signed in September and is in response to public pressure following the 7th July terrorist attacks. Emergency services were severely hampered by their inability to communicate effectively while attending the underground bombings last year.

Unlike other major cities the London Underground network does not have any systems for mobile communications despite public pressure for 18 years asking for a network to be set up for the emergency services.

With mobile phone company O2 winning the contract there will be increased speculation that a public network could be in place on the Tube within the next decade.

I think it might work if it is for emergency calls for the staff to use to communicate to people outside of the stations (overhead). This does deserve some serious consideration.
