Mobile buyers survey shows price unimportant

by Patrick Altoft on February 23, 2007

An interesting bulletin from market information providers NPD Group reveals the most important factors consumers take into account when buying a mobile phone. Surprisingly price is twelfth on the list.

According to the NDP data the top factors being taken into account are whether the phone had the desired functions and whether it was a flip phone. Third most important factor was the manufacturer which shows how the top 4 handset makers have established a reputation of making quality phones that people can rely on.

Other findings from the report:

  • The youngest buyers seek a desirable device that reeks of ‘cool’ (design is key, but the phone has to deliver on functionality, too).
  • Young to middle-aged buyers want a wide range of capabilities. Getting just the right combination is the trick, so the device must strike a balance between popular must-have features and those that might just be nice to have.
  • For people just past middle age and the older crowd, a solid flip phone will suffice; however, it shouldn’t lack basic capabilities and the brand is still important, too.
