Mobile patents: School bus tracking and interactive scoreboards

by Patrick Altoft on February 4, 2007

Some more interesting patents have been published this week. This time they are pretty relevant to the real world and are applications that would be very useful.

Interactive audience participation at a live entertainment event

Interactive scoreboard

This patent covers an interesting invention that allows audience participation at large events such as sport tournaments or concerts. The method allows the audience to use an interactive device which sends data to a central computer.

The possibilities of this system are endless and users could subscribe to scores, quizzes, stats and trivia as well and much more. Users at a concert could answer questions on the band and results displayed live on large screens.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a method for providing interactive audience participation at live entertainment events. The method includes providing audience members with an interactive device that presents a promotional message and includes a user interface, broadcasting audio programming to the audience member through the interactive device, querying the audience members, wherein answers to the querying may be entered by the audience member via the user interface of the interactive device, transmitting the answers to a central processor, storing the answers as audience data, processing the audience data into results, storing the results of the processing of the audience data and broadcasting the results of the processing of the audience data.

School bus tracking and notification system

School bus tracking

In this patent granted to Lucent the inventor discusses a method for alerting parents when the school bus is coming so that kids don’t need to wait outside or risk missing the bus.

A parent subscribes to the service by sending a text to a central database which then stores the parent’s location and periodically queries the bus to see whether its location is near to the parents.

Once the bus is getting close a text message is sent to the parent and the kids can leave the house.

Abstract:

In a school bus tracking system, each school bus is provided with a mobile station and an ID. The bus ID’s and telephone numbers for the buses’ mobile stations are stored in a tracking application/database. At a residence, a parent sends a message to the tracking application that includes the ID of a bus that services the residence, and a radius. The message may be sent using a short message service, i.e., a text message to a particular address utilized by the tracking application. Then, the tracking application causes the locations of the bus mobile station and the parent’s mobile station to be periodically polled. When the bus mobile station comes within the radius, the tracking application issues a message to the parent mobile station alerting the parent that the bus is approaching. The system may be used to track other vehicles, objects (e.g., packages), and/or persons.
