Mobile phone causes panic on BAA flight to New York

by Patrick Altoft on August 14, 2006

A mobile phone caused panic on a British Airways flight to New York yesterday after it started ringing mid flight.

The phone was stored in hand luggage and when nobody owned up to bringing it the captain was forced by worried passengers to turn back to Heathrow. Since last weeks terror alerts mobile phones have been banned from hand luggage.

Security teams on the ground advised that the plane could continue safely but after 90 minutes angry passengers complained and the pilot returned to the UK.

152 out of the original 217 passengers chose to stay on the plane and continue to JFK airport. BA said that nobody has yet to claim ownership of the phone and they are investigating the incident.
