Mobile Phone Crackdown in US Prisons

by Patrick Altoft on May 3, 2006

Texan prisoner Michael Manor is facing 40 years behind bars in a shock ruling today after he was found with a mobile phone in prison.

The decision is being hailed as an important victory by prosecutors who are waging war on inmate’s mobile phone usage.

Manor was in prison serving 32 years already for theft and was not using the mobile phone for any illegal purposes.

This is the latest example of strict penalties for smuggling items such as phones into prisons. One effect of the policy is that the items are shooting up in value as the penalties increase.
