Mobile phone virus threat increases

by Patrick Altoft on February 13, 2007

An industry study published yesterday at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona reveals that mobile phone operators are feeling the impact of viruses thanks to increased mobile email and internet use.

The joint study between McAfee and Informa said that attacks on cell phones rose fivefold during 2006 with 83% of the worlds networks affected in some way.

McAfee commented that:

Mobile operators are already feeling the impact of mobile threats on customer satisfaction and network performance and are increasingly concerned about the potential impact on their brand and the success of new revenue-generating services.

Although the report makes alarming reading the risk of your cell phone becoming affected is still relatively small. The latest version of the popular smartphone software, Symbian, is the most secure ever and it’s makers have yet to find any malware written for it.
