Mobile phone users will soon be able to make calls from the air aboard Ryanair planes.
The leading budget airline is installing equipment to allow passengers to safely use mobile phones while the plane is in the air. Phones must remain switched off during take off and landing. We reported recently about mobile phones being allowed in certain hospitals after research proved they did not switch off life support machines as some people feared.
It is not clear how much money Ryanair will be making off the project but we understand they receive a cut of the roaming charges levied by the mobile networks.
Although Ofcom has cleared the project on safety grounds it warned of “the potential for increased levels of agitation” among passengers forced to listen to other users conversations.
“Aircraft operators will need to decide on procedures for permitted use and on how the service should be offered – eg business class only, quiet zones, system down time (for when passengers might wish to sleep) etc,” it added.
