The R&A, golf ‚s governing body, has revealed concerns about the user of camera phones by members of the gallery following this years Open Championship.
Tiger Woods was repeatedly interrupted by the use of mobile phones and his caddy, Steve Williams, had to be continually on the lookout for people who looked like they could distract Tiger.
In the US Open there were fewer problems as spectators were required to pass through airport style security checks to make sure there were no phones or cameras present on the course.
The Ryder Cup is expected to take advantage of similar systems but it is still not clear whether next years Open will be subject to the same regulations.
The R&A ‚s chief executive, Peter Dawson, said he did not like the events he witnessed on Sunday and indicated that it was more difficult under British law to confiscate items like camera-phones than it was in the US. “We will have to get our thinking caps on,” he said, making it clear there was no easy solution.
Tiger Woods was heard to warn several members of the gallery on Sunday and said he had never seen anything like it before. “Cameras or camera phones kept going off while we were over the shot or preparing to hit the shot or even hitting the shot.”
