Mobile phones going Underground in London

by Patrick Altoft on March 14, 2007

Transport for London has announced that they will be testing mobile phone and wireless internet technology on the London Underground later this year.

The services will be tested on the Waterloo & City lines along with platforms at Waterloo and Bank stations.

A document outlining the plans states:

On completion of installation works at the trial sites there will be a period of evaluation of the performance, suitability, reliability and maintenance. LU will assess the results of the trial to determine whether to provide mobile telephony and data services on the LU network

The trial has apparently been agreed due to public pressure and the desire to make traveling by tube safer in the wake of last years bombings.
