Mobile phones will not be banned from schools

Glasgow City Council has issued guidance to head teachers on the use of camera phones in schools this week.

In the letter the council said it would not be appropriate to ban mobile phones but that they should be turned off during the school day.

The advice comes after a 15 year old boy was filmed assaulting a rector in the Scottish Borders recently. George Gardner, deputy director of education services, said that every school should have a clear policy on mobile phone use and that pupils should not be allowed to film staff or other pupils without advance permission.

The letter stated that:

Many young people and parents regard these as essential means of communication. However, while mobile phones can continue to be brought into schools, there must be strict limitations on their use. All phones should be turned off during the school day and put away during lessons. It would be a misuse of a mobile phone to record staff or other pupils without permission.
