Motorola build wind up mobile phone

by Patrick Altoft on May 19, 2006

The commercial wind up mobile phone has become a step closer today with the Motorola PVOT hand powered concept phone.

The low cost device uses a hand crank to charge a rechargeable AA battery. According to Motorola the phone has been designed to “Bridge the digital and wireless communication gap in developing countries”.

The phone doesn’t have many power hungry features but the 125 x 125 dot matrix LCD screen looks quite retro and the keypad could be from any popular Motorola model. The phone needs only 25 cranks to power the battery for 1 minute of usage.
