OmniVision, the semiconductor imaging company, has launched a new camera phone lens at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona today.
The TrueFocus camera uses Wavefront Coding technology and is designed for the cameraphone market. TrueFocus aims to revolutionise the market by offering a true point and shoot capability without needing to wait for the lens to focus. Even with fast focusing lenses there is always a slight delay and you can often miss a vital shot. The new lens allows the camera to take a picture straight away and tidy the image up later by making sure its all in focus.
Jess Lee, Vice President for OmniVision, said:
TrueFocus enables consumers to capture the images they see in real time, with no waiting for the lens to focus and no missed opportunities. TrueFocus delivers our customers a product that effectively targets the mobile handset market by being small, durable, easy to manufacture and cost-competitive.
Wavefront Coding is a method of optically encoding light to form an immediate images and then using digital processing to decode the image and create a final image that is in focus across the whole picture.
The lens released today will be a 3 mega pixel version.
Manufacturers are being told that the lenses are smaller and simple to integrate into existing handset ranges. With no moving parts the lenses also require less power and are less likely to have problems than traditional lenses.
