O2 cuts roaming charges to be the lowest of the big 5

by Patrick Altoft on May 12, 2006

O2 has announced a new 35p per minute tariff as it bows to pressure from the European Commission and follows its rivals in cutting roaming charges.

The price cut will be available across Europe from July and makes O2 the cheapest of the UK’s major networks.

T Mobile and Vodafone were the first to announce the reduced charges and Orange quickly followed. Under the circumstances O2 had little choice but to announce price cuts of their own.

The O2 service requires users to opt in otherwise they still are charged the old rates of up to 85p. In contrast T Mobile users are automatically signed up to the discounted call rates.
