Google phone could be like a Blackberry

by Patrick Altoft on March 6, 2007

A well known venture capitalist is claiming to have insider details on
the Google Phone this week.

Simeon Simeonov of Polaris Venture Partners has reported that the
rumoured Google Phone will be Blackberry like and run C++ as well as
offering VOIP.

Simeonov commented:

Apparently, Google is planning to build distribution relationships
with multiple carriers by allowing them to minimize subscription and
marketing costs. In other words, Google will market the phone online
and carriers will fulfill. How fast can you say dumb
pipe?

We first class=boldcopy>reported about the Google Phone in January when
photos were leaked showing an iPhone style touchscreen device.

The phone is apparently going to be a collaboration between Google
and Samsung and is codenamed the “Switch”. Features are likely to
include mobile versions of Google Maps and Gmail as well as an easy to
access search interface.

Google apparently has over 100 employees working on the Google Phone
and has acquired several companies that would help it build a mobile
device.

Quote from News.com:

Google hired Andy Rubin, founder of Danger, a handheld device maker,
and later Android, a mobile software maker, which he sold to Google in
August of 2005. Google also acquired Reqwireless, a mobile
applications company that Simeonov says has “apparently played a role
in developing the suite of Google mobile apps.” And Google secretly
acquired a company called Skia, whose first product is a portable
graphics engine that renders 2D graphics on handhelds, he says.
