Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Review, better than the iPhone?

by Patrick Altoft on March 19, 2009

Although the Iphone is pretty cool it still has a long way to go to tick all the boxes. With Iphones being all the rage, Nokia wants a slice of the action so lets see how it compares to the Iphone:

5800
Nokia 5800

Here are a few points that might help you decide:

Cost
This is definitely at the top of the requirements in these tough times. Phones are a luxury item so it needs to be affordable. The Nokia 5800 is cheaper than the Iphone which is a definite plus.

Display
It looks very similar to the iphone but the resolution is better on the Nokia 5800 with 640*360 pixels against 480*320 pixels for the iPhone.

Camera
The Nokia 5800 boasts a 3.2Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash whilst the iphone can only muster a basic 2Mpix camera, without flash. Here the 5800 wins hands down!

Music
The Nokia 5800 has its own music store and its apparently free for the first year which is another credit crunch busting point. Although Itunes has been around for a few years now, we all love a bargain and with the increased battery power topping the iphone battery need I say more?!

Video recording
The Nokia 5800 is capable of video recording which is something the Iphone still cant do

MMS

Another point the Nokia 5800 is able to do and the Iphone isn’t

Overall, the Nokia 5800 is the clear winner here don’t you think? The Nokia “iPhone” offers excellent value for money so why not give it a go.

okay I will agree that there are a lot of new phones coming out that have better hardware options then the iPhone but the reason the iPhone is still beating competition with better features is that it is really really easy to use. The OS is what is beating other phones out. Now OS X lite 3.0 (iPhone OS) is making huge updates this summer to the phone. I mean turn by turn directions, MMS, multi player games, and much more. On top of that they are boasting over 100 more new features. and I will admit some of them are probably going to be faster safari, and more reliable safari, some of them could be something incredible we just don’t know yet. Also when look at the iphones history every a new version of the OS comes out they have also paired it with a new version of the hardware as well. For all we know the iPhone G3 will have a better screen, better processor, better camera with flash (maybe in the apple logo lol) and the ability to take video, better battery, up to 32GB of storage, and more. Although this beats the iPhone now I wouldn’t wait very long to see Apple come out with something better by the end of the summer. It’s like the iPod, once they have a good foothold in the industry they just keeping putting out updates every year to make sure it keeps it.

You compare with in some areas.

What about sound quality?
what about os, hardware ?
what about apple touch screen?

These are some areas in which apple leads.

But comparison is well.

I had the Nokia 5800 for 4 weeks and sent it back replacing it with the iphone. The iphone is the winner for me. I found the touch screen on the Nokia to be insensitive when using a finger, you really need to use the supplied stick all the time and of course, it doesn’t support double touch like the iphone where you can place 2 fingers on the screen and drag them apart to enlarge an area of a page.

My phone also lost all it’s contacts one day and had a habit of turning itself off whenever it wanted. The navigation is nowhere near as good as the iphone which lets you add icons on the screen to favorit web pages, then there is the lack of applications available compared with the 1000′s available for the iphone, but of course I realise time may solve this.

The camera isn’t as good on the iphone but it’s not bad. The sreen on the Nokia may be higher res than the iphone but the iphone’s screen is larger and much easier to watch, especially when surfing the web or watching tv/video. BBC iplayer is great on the iphone, I just watched an episode of Rbin Hood that I had missed and it was fantastic.

I also prefer the glass screen of the iphone which just needs the lightest of touch from your finger with pinpoint accuracy and a smooth flowing image.

I used to have an N95 8GB which was fantastic in all aspects and never let me down but I felt the 5800 was a step backwards and I wanted my N95 back but the wife said no! So I now have the iphone, a vastly superior phone in my humble opinion. Sorry Nokia but after 15 years of buying only Nokia phones I’ve had to change.

I love the Nokia phone and have always stuck with this brand but lately I feel the new wave of “music phones” has taken them off track. I had to return mine because it was just too slow (texting). I now have an Iphone but the Nokia 5800 might tempt me back.

Nokia introduced an update for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic at the begining of April i think, and is downloadble free.

I cant remember the details exactly, but the update is extensive and adds alot more features and functionality to the 5800.

Now let us be objective..or can we be?
the 5800 has:
1) flash
2) 2 cameras
3) it can do video calls
4) it can take videos
5) you can use it to record voice
6)it has a radio
7)Blue tooth can be used for file sharing(iphone NO!!! only headset)
8)when you travel, the you can slip a new battery in the 5800 NOT on the iPhone

NO comparison really!!! bE FAIR
IPhone has the SNOB factor which the 5800 does not and a much higher price tag. People value the SNOB factor..so it will sell… but the 5800 beats it hands down
In iPhone’s favour one has to find that it is better to use, like Macs, but just like Macs it is overlimited for now.
The iPhone has many more gadgets programs and accessories and will hold the value better on resale
iPhone may well improve things with the July 09 release
iPhone is definitely cooler, but nowhere near as functional and for those of you that are in limbo, the N98 is on it’s way.. way superior in features but also more expensive.

What about the fact that as per usual with a new nokia it has so many problems they would need a website to list them.

Not sure why everyone compares a new phone to the iPhone??? No one seems to do it with other phones.

As for general reliability and ease of use then there is no comparison as the iPhone wins hands down.

This comment does not come from reading about phones it’s from the experience of working with them and seeing how often they end up coming back with problems.

Even the new Iphone doesn’t compare to the Nokia 5800, yes they have a 3mb camera but the nokia has the 3.2Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss Optics :)

If you want a phone that isn’t as good as the Nokia 5800 and locked down by Apple get the iphone
