Nokia patents diamond coated mobile phones

by Patrick Altoft on January 23, 2007

Nokia has filed a patent for mobile phones coated in a diamond like material derived from coal. The coating makes mobile phones much more durable and resistant to scratches.

The process involves coal ions being bonded to the surface of the phone to form a protective layer 100 nanometres thick.

The coating can be applied to all plastics and forms a smooth and shiny surface. When the phone is thrown away the protective layer will biodegrade although this will leave the plastic casing.

Abstract:

The invention relates to a cover, a mobile communications apparatus and a method for producing a coated cover for an electronic apparatus. According to the invention at least a part of the cover is coated with a DLC-coating, also called an amorphous diamond coating.

The full patent is available via the USPTO

When it comes to gadgets like mobile phones, I am not more into how it looks but what are the features it can offer, though this mobile phones coated in a diamond is a slick one… But still I wanted a mobile phone that is equipped with a music player that supports MP3 and Apple’s AAC formats just like the Sony Ericsson W600i walkman.
