Nokia has issued a press release asking users to unplug chargers when they are not in use. Apparently this can save enough electricity to power 85,000 homes a year.
New Nokia phones will remind users to unplug their phone chargers as soon as the battery is charged.
Kirsi Sormunen, Vice-President of Environmental Affairs at Nokia said:
Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket. We want to reduce this waste and are working on reducing to an absolute minimum the amount of energy our chargers use. The new alerts also play an important role, encouraging people to help us in this goal by unplugging their chargers.
This is an amazing statistic and one which make me wonder why manufacturers haven’t added auto power off features to their chargers in the past.
By 2010 Nokia aims to have reduced by an additional 50% the amount of electricity a charger consumes whilst still plugged into the mains but not the phone, lets hope other manufacturers follow suit.

I have come up with an idea to intergrate an alarm or piezzo buzzer into a mobile phone charger so that the alarm goes off if the charger is left plugged in after charging is completed.Does anyone have any views or contributions to this idea , please email me to gomeraben@msn.com, your views will be greatly appreciated.
