Police crackdown on using mobile phones while driving

Drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel in the UK face bigger penalties in the future as police crack down.

The current penalty of a £30 fine will increase to a £60 fine and 3 points on your license from 27th February.

Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander said that the tougher legislation was a result of public opinion and that although most supported the law almost a quarter of drivers admitted breaking it.

Mr Alexander said:

Research shows that talking on a mobile phone while driving affects your concentration and ability to react to dangerous situations. It’s quite simple – it’s impossible to do two things at once and do them well.

During 2004 74,000 of the £30 fixed penalty notices were handed out.
