When China Mobile overtook Vodafone as the biggest mobile phone company in the world last week we started thinking about which companies had the biggest websites. There are a variety of mobile & cell phone sites on the web from handset manufacturers, networks and retailers to news, reviews and forum sites and its often hard to pick out which have the most influence and the largest user base.
In this study we have picked the top 50 websites in terms of visibility for key phrases on various search engines and conducted some research into their traffic figures. If your favourite site is not listed please let us know and the table will be updated. Traffic analysis was conducted using the Alexa rankings. Alexa data is not 100% accurate but for websites with a rank of less than 100,000 it is generally regarded as a very good indication of relative traffic.
The data is very interesting especially for the retailers who no doubt have spotted the rankings of their competitors and are either very pleased or disappointed with how they are placed. China Mobile seems to have cemented its number 1 position ahead of all the usual major players. Orange.co.uk has seen a large traffic jump recently after it merged with Wanadoo and started offering broadband services in the UK.
Phonescoop leads the news sites in 10th place but it’s a surprise to see vodafone.com down in 24th spot – the regional variations are clearly getting most of their traffic.
The traffic ranking figures in the table relate to the position that the site holds in relation to all other sites on the web. You can see the top 500 sites as a guide, Yahoo, MSN and Google are the top 3.
Update: thanks for pointing out a few extra sites. The list now has 69 entries………

A submission for your review of top mobile phone sites. Textually.org is the entry point of three weblogs devoted to cell phones and mobile content, focusing on text messaging. Ranks 1,214 in Technorati.

mad4mobilephones 09.01.06 at 1:41 pm
Hi Jason, we have not included any ringtone/downloads sites in the rankings this time. However if we do the list again I will try to include them.
Sam 09.03.06 at 2:30 pm

Kewl! I just happen to be in the market for a new cell phone and I will visit several sites that made this list. I like the Nokia N73. If I don’t go with a Razr, then the N73 will probably be the winner.

Great list. Some of the sites are surprise entries. I only wish you could update this regularly, maybe, once every 3 months.

Nokia N95\r\n \r\nThe Nokia N95 is an absolutely jaw-dropping incredible device. It would be doing it a huge disservice to simply call it a mobile phone. What can you call a jewel of electronic wizardry which incorporates a 5 megapixel camera, satellite navigation, media player, a full suite of PDA features and, oh yes, even makes phone calls? That\\\’s going to be a tough decision, but I believe that there is a groundswell of opinion behind the term: \\\”Mine!\\\”\r\nThe Nokia N95\\\’s two way sliding format lets you go slip slidin\\\’ away to choose between a proper keypad or a fully touch sensitive arrangement of player controls. The first time you see the 2.6 inch screen switch to landscape mode and the 3D multimedia menu start rotating around, you\\\’re likely going to dive for your credit card.\r\nWhen you\\\’re sloshed by the boardwalk in Blackpool and trying to find your way back to your hotel, you\\\’ll appreciate the N95\\\’s capability of downloading local maps on the fly, GPSing you within a few feet and showing you just where the heck you are.\r\nThe 5 megapixel camera exceeds the performance of Nokia\\\’s already superlative N93i snapshooter, featuring a Carl Zeiss lens with autofocus which renders super strong colours and provides exceptional picture quality in even very low light situations. Should you need a little help in the lumens department, the LED flash will shed a lot of light on your subject so that your buddy can see the next day how green his face was at 3 am. There is also a secondary pinhole camera for videophone transmission.\r\nThe Nokia 95 provides mini-HDTV resolution and clarity during playback on MPEG-4 format. It\\\’s really hard to believe that it\\\’s actually\\\’ being generated by a phone. While on the subject of the phone (yes, it\\\’s easy to forget that there are telephone features here too), the quality of the voice calls is astounding. You might think your mates were right in the room. Surprisingly, the sound quality of the music playback on both FM and MP3 doesn\\\’t quite measure up to the phone. Regardless, dump the earbuds that come with the N95 and invest in a top quality set. Everything will sound much better.\r\nAs to whether the Nokia N95 can capture a strong share of its market segment in direct competition with the iPhone which should eventually retail at less than half the price is going to be difficult to say. It has a stonking great feature set, implemented with the usual Nokia panache, all wrapped up in a tidy package that is going to have people swiveling their heads like Linda Blair in the Exorcist to have a gander, especially when they see the Google Earth-like GPS animation swoop down from space and right down to your pub. Is it the ultimate phone of the mobile/PDA wave or does it have the chops to surf the iPhone wave? The punters will have to make that determination when they vote with their debit cards at the local shops.\r\n\r\nfor more information visit http://www.thatzcool.co.uk\r\n\r\nBye but only for now\r\n \r\ncatch ya laterzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
