Samsung backs fuel cells

by Patrick Altoft on May 18, 2006

Samsung is betting on fuel cells being the future of mobile phone power and has signed an 18 month deal to build methanol cells with a US based fuel cell firm.

Despite the much evident benefits of fuel cells there has yet to be a viable commercial application of the technology and many have assumed that the fuel cell would never reach production.

Methanol based fuel cells can provide hours of power but the technology is not commercially viable. Users would also need to top up the cells with fresh methanol which is sure to be a disadvantage.

In spite of this, Samsung believes that fuel cells may be the solution to the problem of powering the feature-rich, power-hungry mobile devices of tomorrow.
