Samsung creates double sided mobile phone screen

by Patrick Altoft on January 4, 2007

Samsung Electonics, the worlds largest LCD screen manufacturer, has announced the worlds first truly double sided LCD screen.

The screen is the first that can display independent images on both sides at the same time and has the potential to shave 1mm off the size of mobile devices. With Samsung continually competing, mainly with itself, to create the thinnest phones this is a major breakthrough. This year Samsung mobile phones have been getting thinner and thinner all the time.

Executive Vice President Yun Jin-hyuk said:

Our new double-sided mobile display underscores Samsung’s commitment to equip our customers with advanced display technology that accelerates the trend toward slimmer mobile products. We anticipate high demand when we commence mass production in the first half of 2007.

The display only requires one backlight so will save on parts and overall weight as well as thickness. In its prototype form the display has the same resolution and colour depth as most high end phones so this is already more than a proof of concept.
