Music phones are about to receive a substantial boost thanks to a new memory chip being developed by Samsung.
The 16GB NAND flash memory chips are being manufactured using a new process which is 60 percent more efficient than standard. The 51 nanometer process also means the chips are 80 percent faster than the 60 nm process in use at present.
Analysts are predicting sales of $21 billion for the new chips by 2010.
Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, commented:
In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics.
To minimize production costs and improve performance, we have applied the finest process technology a ‘half generation’ ahead of the industry, which is introducing 55nm and higher.
