Sony Ericsson have finally announced the rumoured W880 Walkman phone today as well as the W888, a non 3G version for the Chinese market.
The W880 builds on the fantastic success of previous Walkman phones such as the W810 and is designed to appeal to consumers wanting an ultra slim handset. Sony Ericsson have sold over 20 million Walkman phones since they launched in 2005.
The Sony Ericsson W880 is just 9.4mm thick, the same as a CD case, and is the slimmest ever Sony Ericsson mobile phone yet. A 1GB Memory Stick Micro is included in the package so you can store around 1000 tracks. As you would expect on a Walkman phone the focus is on providing the highest quality music player possible and the Walkman Player 2.0 software combined with Disc2Phone really makes the W880 special.
A 2 megapixel camera is also crammed into this phone and Sony Ericsson are very pleased with the size and specifications. Steve Walker, head of Product Marketing, said:
Our Walkman phones have proven to be phenomenally attractive to our consumers – we have sold 20 million Walkman phones since launch – and we are continuously developing the portfolio to extend their appeal. The W880 proves how the Walkman phone can appeal to different lifestyles – the W880/W888 is a hi-specification device that looks every bit as good as it sounds.
According to the press release the W880 represents a milestone in the Walkman range thanks to its Steel Silver or Flame Black colours and stunning design. The brushed steel finish is bound to be a top seller.
The Disc2Phone software tried and tested on other Walkman phones allows users to transfer tracks to the phone from a PC or CD with ease. The W880 even supports Bluetooth audio streaming so you can play music via a Bluetooth headset or via a car stereo. Importantly the high end features have not impacted the battery life as the phone will deliver 18 hours of music non stop.
Expect the W880 to be available during March in the UK.
