As exam time approaches here in the UK teachers are turning to high tech solutions to prevent students cheating in exams.
Mobile phones are already banned from exam halls but some students sneak them in an use them to text friends for help. According to the Times Educational Supplement schools are installing new software to detect mobile phone activity and either announce it over a looudspeaker or alert teachers to the problem.
Schools have been told they cannot use technology that actually blocks mobile phone calls and text messages: that would be unlawful under the Wireless and Telegraphy Act. But they are allowed to detect phone use.
Melanie Bowler, a teacher, said:
The kids hate the detectors. We love them.
