Nokia have one of the most consistent user interfaces and many people choose to own Nokia after Nokia simply because they are easy to use and making the switch to another system can be difficult. Anybody who has tried to send a text on a friends phone will be able to testify how hard it can be to find the space key.
At a recent Nokia event they unveiled some amazing video of a new concept user interface. Obviously the video has found its way to youtube so we can all see exactly what the interface looks like.
My first thoughts are that it looks like the kind of website where users stare blankly at the navigation while wildly clicking to find some way to get off the homepage. Style over function as the web designers like to call it.
A second look shows that while its not the same icon driven push button style that most phones have it seems remarkably intuitive and mirrors real life rather than emulating a PC screen.
No doubt the humble interface has a long way to go but its through innovation like this and lots of user testing that the industry can more forward. Mobile phone screens are too small to allow access to the myriad of features available these days so something has to change, maybe a new interface is the way forward.
