Vodafone no longer the worlds largest mobile operator

by Patrick Altoft on August 12, 2006

Vodafone is no longer the worlds largest mobile phone company as a 7 year old rival has taken its crown.

China Mobile was set up less than 7 years ago and last week became the worlds most valuable mobile operator when its shares closed at HK$51.50 to value to company at £69.6 billion compared to Vodafones £64 billion.

The market for mobile phones in the far east is huge and China Mobile has over 200 million customers compared to Vodafones 186 million.

Vodafone has not had the best of years so far, shareholders will remember the record losses of £15 billion for 2005 for some years yet.

Note that China Mobile operates only in CHINA & HONG KONG.
Vodafone is still the largest by size of operations as it operates in all the continents of the world.
