Yahoo announced yesterday that it has signed up a large number of corporate advertisers who will be running adverts on Yahoo mobile websites across the world.
Brand advertising will be offered across Western Europe, South Asia and the US and advertisers include major names such as Pepsi, Proctor & Gamble and Nissan.
Yahoo already offer marketing opportunities across its websites but this is the first major expansion into mobile phones. Google are known to be very excited about mobile advertising and Yahoo will want to try and gain as much of a foothold as possible before Google can dominate.
As one of the largest sites on the internet Yahoo is already the top provider of banner adverts and is betting that the mobile phone advertising market will explode in 2007 thanks to large screens such as those on the iPhone.
The latest move follows a partnership in the UK with Vodafone, first announced last November, which allowed Yahoo to show ads to Vodafone users.
This deal is significant for Yahoo in that it will no doubt have a direct impact on their profits and bottom line. Yahoo already have a presence on the mobile web and to sign up a lot of advertisers with deep pockets will keep shareholders more than happy.
